Bakersfield ART


Bakersfield, California is famous for its art and its surroundings are used as subjects in many of the art works. Bakersfield is full of art galleries and art related stores. Sculptures and murals found in every nook and corner of the city depicts the art forms existed in history of Bakersfield. Even many of the traffic light boxes are painted in beautiful designs.

Bakersfield is one of the most active communities in California for performing arts. There are many theaters and each one has something different to offer. Some of them are: MUSICAL THEATER which performs at Harvey Auditorium. STAR THEATER is a dinner theater which has varieties of stage productions. SPOT LIGHT THEATER shows small intimate productions. THE EMPTY SPACE THEATER deals with shows performed by local artists, producers and directors, there are shows in front of live audiences for free. GAS LIGHT MELODRAMA performs comedy shows in which audience participation is must.

In Bakersfield there is “THE ART COUNCIL OF KERN CREATING COMMUNITY”, where artists use the power of their art to bring awareness to the community and it brings the message of hope, change and influence. There is an ART ASSOCIATION which is a nonprofit organization established in 1944 and dedicated to meeting the needs of local artists and art lovers. JULIANS ART STUDIO & GALLERY is dedicated to create a venue for innovative art that can be presented in unique settings.

In addition to Bakersfield art, this place host travelling productions, mostly performed at ROBO BANK THEATRE or the famous FOX THEATER. Some times these travelling productions are also held by HARVEY AUDITORIUM.

Bakersfield CULTURE

Bakersfield culture is a mixture of energy, simplicity, fun and pure pleasure. It’s an absolute balance of sophistication which offers live jazz with chill wine for one's enjoyment. The most integral part of Bakersfield culture is its landscape which includes its agricultural land, valley, hills and rural communities.

Bakersfield HISTORY

Bakersfield is situated besides the southern end of SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY in KERN COUNTY. About 8000 years ago, the YOKUT INDIANS came and settles down in JAQUIN VALLEY for the very first time. In the year 1776, FRANCISCO GARCES, Spanish missionary father was the first European to discover Bakersfield.

In the year 1851, discovery of gold near KERN RIVER made people rush towards JAQUIN VALLEY. In the year 1865, oil was discovered which brought another group of pioneers to Bakersfield. In the year 1869, the founding ceremony of the city was done and was named as BAKERSFIELD in honor of COLONEL THOMAS BAKER. Gold rush of California had brought him to the valley where he purchased 170 acre of land and started land reclamation. He was later appointed to survey the area for Formal Township.

By 1870, Bakersfield had a population of 600 people and had started growing as major town in California. KERN COUNTY migration from TEXAS, LOUISIANA, OKLAHOMA and SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA brought new residents in Bakersfield. Bakersfield population started growing from 600 in year 1870 to 347,483 in year 2010. It is 9th largest city in California and 51st largest in United States.

Its economy depends on agriculture, petroleum extraction and refining and manufacturing. According to US Census Bureau, the city has total area of 143.6 square miles, of which 142.2 square miles is land and 1.4 square miles is water. It is 100 miles north of Los Angeles and about 300 miles south east away from its state capital SACRAMENTO. Earthquake in July 21st 1952 changed the look of Bakersfield arrangement to flat and sprawling style of buildings that can be seen today also.
