William Thomas Planetarium in Bakersfield was established in 1962, but it is said that it was opened for public in early January of 1963, and is named after Bill Thomas, a congressman who represented the 22nd Californian congressional district and collected $ 7million to upgrade the planetarium.
The planetarium’s building was remodeled with upgraded equipments in the year 2006 to match with 21st century planetarium. It was made ideal for seating of 72 people facing in the same direction as people can enjoy the show without any stress and pain.
The planetarium is now equipped with all kind of new optical and mechanical star projects and dome video system. There are Shows for the students of the campus in the morning and evening, and for general public, shows are available twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays and tickets need to be purchased for that.
The duration of the each show differs from other, some shows last up to 2 hours while some are longer.
There are different shows based on Ice World, Season of Light, different Planets, Moon and Stars which help students gain knowledge about the universe.
Visitors of the Planetarium can see the animated work of the remodeling of planetarium from old to the upgraded one.
There is comparison of original and new floor plan as well as pricing of the equipments is also shown which makes it more interesting as it shows how the planetarium has evolved. |
