Fox Theatre located at Bakersfield is a historical theatre showcasing premium concerts, rock arts, ballets, pop, live entertainment events by notable artists, comedians and showcasing foreign film once a year from fall to spring. It is Bakersfield’s heart for art and entertainment.
Almost eight decades since Fox theatre opened up on Christmas Day eve in the 1930 featuring a scientific fiction film Just Imagine. Since then, Fox Theatre has been entertaining people with latest films on silver screen and the stage has been graced by innumerable notable artists and groups like Lawrence Mervil Tibbett, Kirsten Målfrid Flagstad, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Arthur Rubinstein to name a few.
Over the years, Fox Theatre has not only witnessed the best of the artists but also stood the times of test. In 1952, when earthquake levelled the whole city of Bakersfield, Fox Theatre stood unshaken, thanks to the steel skeleton and concrete muscles.
Originally, the theatre was build on Spanish Colonial Revival Style both from inside and outside. The interiors of the theatre were designed in atmospheric style. While the murals on the walls depicted countryside resembling a Mediterranean garden wall, the ceiling were kept plain with starts with small stars resembling stars like a night sky.
Time and again the historic theatre has been remodelled to last longer, the plain ceiling with starts is still retained and the walls are painted with murals of modern motifs. These changes have not detained the aura of the theatre and till today, it is a theatre with fine acoustics with classic arts that takes one to an unimaginable world of galaxy. |
