Beale Memorial Clock Tower located right opposite to Kern County Museum at Chester Ave, Bakersfield, California is popularly referred to as a gift to Bakersfield, California. What we see today in Beale Memorial Clock Tower is just a few remenats of the original tower that was built in the Year 1904 by Truxtun Beale after being inspired by a clock tower in Spain. He dedicated this tower to his mother.
Originally it was built between Cheser Ave and 17th St. And stood there for about 48 years until 1952 when the devastating earthquake shook the city. The whole tower had come crumbling down and all that survived was clock works, balcony railings, bell iron shaped spiral stairwell and arch shaped iron grillwork.
In the year 1961, the rumbled tower was ordered for demolition but the citizens of Bakersfield joined hands and worked towards rebuilding the tower with the remenants.
Although Beale Memorial Clock Tower could not find the same place for itself, it was then built in Cheser Ave which is about 1.25 miles away from its original location.
Being in the cetre of Bakersfield, Beale Memorial Clock Tower was more than a clock tower for the citizens who saw it through the decades during the world war 1 and 2. Some even say, Beale Memorial Clock Tower for Bakersfield is like statue of liberty to New York. |
